Orkusalan Operations

Orkusalan offsets its carbon footprint.

Orkusalan, in collaboration with Eflu consulting engineers, monitors the emissions related to its operations. Since its inception, Orkusalan's entire operation has been carbon neutral through its own afforestation efforts, including the driving and flying of employees domestically and internationally, as well as the daily operations of power plants and offices.

Afforestation

Since its establishment, Orkusalan has cultivated a forest at Skeiðsfoss power station. The aim of the afforestation is to cultivate a multipurpose forest that fits well with the land. The forest sequesters carbon, stabilizes the water regime, and increases soil fertility. The area is also used for outdoor activities all year round, thanks to the diversity and shelter provided by the forest.

The size of the afforestation area is 65 hectares, with Orkusalan's forest covering 19 hectares and sequestering 122 tons of CO2 annually. Thus, the forest sequesters approximately three times the greenhouse gas emissions from the company's operations. Orkusalan will continue to cultivate the forest in the coming years and increase the use of the afforestation area.
